Her cookie frostings are spread out across the counter like a rainbow or an artist’s palette. Patty Weatherwax just got home from her job in Big Rapids where she works as a human resources manager, and now her sleeves are rolled up and her eyes are sparkling. She’s tackling her stack of Christmas Cookie orders. Her new endeavor, “B-Creative” is an at-home business that creates cookies, cakes and crafts "to suit your creative nature." A wife, mother and grandmother, Patty thrives on being creative, whether it’s stamping, quilting, beading, sewing, making jewelry, cooking or baking. And most of all she loves to teach. Over the years, she has given classes in candy making and how to make gingerbread houses and chocolate suckers - well, just about any thing you can think of. She has a craft room in her basement filled with supplies, including 500 cookie cutters and 60 different cake forms. She once made a life-sized gingerbread cookie and 4x8 gingerbread cutouts of the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan when her children were in school. "My kids say I’m not normal," she laughed. "But what is normal? Besides, they like to help. Most of the kids love it when I make turtles because I make the caramels from scratch." While demonstrating cake and cookie decorating at Blackberry Rose, a customer asked if she knew anyone who would bake Christmas cookies for him. "That’s how it started," she said. "My neighbor, Joy Van Drie, helped me, by placing a brochure of all my Holiday cookies being offered in their Toy Town store in downtown Cadillac, with some cookie samples. And I was on my way."
Now, people who are too busy to bake their own homemade cookies for Christmas or other holiday events just need to give Patty a call. She currently lists 16 different types of Christmas cookies available from her home kitchen, from Gingerbread Men and Green Christmas Wreath Cookies to Frosted Sour Cream Sugar Cookies and Russian Tea Cookies. The Holiday cookies can be purchased by the dozen, or in assortment trays of three dozen. From time to time, Patty adds new cookies selections to the variety of choices. If you are hungry for a specific cookie, give her a call to see if she can make them, she has a large library of recipes. "So far I’ve been lucky," she said. "Customers seemed to be pleased with the cookies. Now I am baking at night and over the weekends. I love to bake.” She not only receives calls and orders for cookies, but also was asked to host a cookie-decorating table for children at a birthday party. “It went over so well,” she stated, “that I have decided to add that to our list of events that our customers can order from B’Creative. Just call for more details.” She pre-baked dozens of sugar cookies, set up decorating stations with frostings, sprinkles and utensils, and let the children have fun. "The girls at the party were very excited, and when they got busy decorating their cookies, you could hear a pin drop. Cookie decorating isn’t just for little girls, boys, and even adults love decorating cookies." Once she thought of opening a craft store in Cadillac, but now she is pleased to be at home with her husband Greg, doing what she loves best baking, creating craft projects, and teaching those things to others. "I told Greg," she smiled, putting the finishing touches on a sugar cookie, "Now I know what I want to do when I grow up.” |
